Veterans Memorial Park


A ground-breaking ceremony was held Tuesday morning, September 15, 2015, for the area
of Bona Dea Trails and Sanctuary that will soon take shape as the River Valley Veterans Memorial
Park.  The project will happen in three phases with the first, the parking lot.  Representatives from
Marine Corps League 1310, the American Legion, City of Russellville, Pope County Quorum Court,
VFW Riders Group 13, Senator's office, Veterans of Foreign Wars, Veterans Service Office (Pope
and Yell counties) and the U. S. Army Corp of Engineers attended the event.

Quilts of Valor, Judy Baker, presented Marine Ron Anderson with his quilt for valor and service to our country. What an honor to be asked for the Marine Corps
League Lake Dardanelle Detachment 1310 to help in this presentation. We are thankful for men like Ron! Ron Anderson, Bert Page, Allen Farley, Larry Mars, Larry Lee Beyette, Bill Hefley, Dolores Jackson and Jack Jackson.
 
 


George Gray

George Earl Gray age 94 of Dardanelle died Friday, May 22, 2015 at Arkansas Hospice River Valley Home.  He was born March 19, 1921, at Chickalah to the late David Franklin and Rosa Ellen Dean Gray.  He was an Elder at Gum Springs Cumberland Presbtyerian Church.  As a member of the United States Marine Corps’s  “Fighting Fourth Division” he served in the Pacific during WWII.  He saw active duty on Saipan, Tinian, Roi Namur and Iwo Jima. 

He was preceded in death by his parents; two brothers,  Joseph Frank Gray and Everett Worth Gray; two sisters,  Ester Gray Carter and Elsie Gray Carter.

Survivors include his wife, Rebecca Sue Mercer Gray of Dardanelle;  two daughters, Venetta Jo Moczygemba and husband Allen of Texas, Karen Sue Adney of Dardanelle;  eight grandchildren;  six great grandchildren and numerous nieces and nephews.

Memorial services will be held at 10:00 A.M., Friday,  May 29, 2015 at Cornwell Chapel in Dardanelle with Bobby Loyd officiating.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Arkansas Hospice River Valley Home, 220 John Babish Lane, Russellville, Arkansas 72801.

 

 


May 11th Meeting 2015

Gunnery Sgt. Stephen W. Losten presented MCL 1310 
with a 48 star flag once flown over the U.S. Embassy in Mexico.

          
Gunnery Sgt. Losten was the veteran of four (4) U.S. Conflicts which
included WWII, Korea, and Vietnam.  Gunnery Sgt. Losten was part
of the detail that replaced the flags over the embassy in 1954.

Recent Activities

 

 
     

 

In June, the detachment installed new officers for 2009-10 and the Detachment celebrated its first year with a Birthday cake.

  In July, the Detachment was given a presentation by Jim Bob Humphreys about the Soldier Bear program.  Jim Bob was given a Certificate of Appreciation for his many patriotic contributions to the community.

 

Don Sloan was given a Certificate to honor his contributions as Commandant for 2008-2009. 

 

In August, USAF veteran Harry Brown gave a slide presentation of photo’s taken while he was stationed on the island of Iwo Jima 1957-58.
 

   

A flag that was flown at MCRD San Diego, MCRD Parris Island, the Marine Corps War Memorial at Arlington and on the island of Iwo Jima was presented to the Detachment, along with a glass vial of Iwo Jima sand to members present, by Ken Harper.  The Detachment inducted Harper as its first Honorary Member.


 

     

We have started a detachment of the Marine Corps League in Russellville, Arkansas and invite all Marines in the area to join.  We received our charter from the Marine Corps League National Headquarters September 2008.  At the present time we are almost 30 strong and growing fast.
